USNT Coach Selection Process

The selection of coaches for USODA National Team practices or National Team organized travel regattas are decided by the Performance Director of the National Team with the council of the USODA National Team Committee Chair and Vice Chair. The selection of coaches is based on a variety of subjective factors as evaluated by the Performance Director.

For each coach selection process, the Performance Director evaluates the following criteria:

  • Opportunity for the sailors
  • Special skill in a specific area of sailboat racing
  • High national or international recognition in our sport
  • Educated in the coaching field
  • Always having the best interest of the athletes in mind
  • Demonstrated knowledge of using soft skills in coaching
  • USODA background check is clear

There are a variety of variables influencing the coach selection process for the USODA National Team.  It is the Performance Director’s responsibility to make selections that will always be in the best interest of the athletes.

The Performance Director will also attend many or all events organized by the National Team. This is to ensure consistency for performance and the knowledge of each member of the team.

When two or more coaches are needed at an event it is likely that the Performance Director will attend unless there are extenuating circumstance precluding the Performance Director from attending.
