The USODA Regatta Committee is pleased to announce that Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, NY will host the 2022 Optimist Team Trials, May 5-8!
Seawanhaka CYC is no stranger to the USODA, hosting the 2013 and 2016 Atlantic Coast Championships, and celebrates its 150th Anniversary as one of the oldest yacht clubs in North America in 2021. Located on the north shore of Long Island, the Club has 475 members who form an active sailing community, encompassing PHRF and one design fleet racing, team racing and cruising for adults, as well as a vibrant junior sailing program.
Racing will take place in Long Island Sound, north of Cold Spring Harbor, where the Sound is over 5 miles wide with normal coastal tidal conditions. Early May typically brings 5-15 knot W-NW breezes along with Spring frontal passages. When air temperatures rise it is possible to get summer-like SW breezes. Typical air temps in this time frame are 58-68 degrees Fahrenheit with water temps around 55 degrees.
Oyster Bay and the immediate area have an abundance of shopping and dining options. If you’re looking for historical perspective, Oyster Bay has plenty to offer in less than six square miles – from the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (home of President Theodore Roosevelt) and Audubon Sanctuary to the east, and the lush gardens of Planting Fields State Historic Park to the west. In the heart of the Hamlet, you’ll find historic buildings such as Raynham Hall, the center of the Long Island spy ring during the revolutionary war and home of the first recorded American Valentine. We also have our own Oyster Bay Railroad museum including the station used by Theodore Roosevelt and a yard with some interesting old train cars. There are also casual beachside dining options as well as an amusement park in nearby Bayville.
The event will be posted on the 2022 event calendar on the USODA website (www.usoda.org) very soon, and updated frequently with information about travel, housing, charters, and much more!
